Robin Wright, who plays Claire Underwood on Netflix’s House Of Cards, was all arms against the gender pay gap recently. She joins ranks with Hollywood A-listers like Particia Arquette, Sandra Bullock, Kate Winslet and more in fight for equal pay for women.

Robin’s alter ego Claire Underwood is equally fierce in standing against gender discrimination on the show as she is in real life. Her character stands at the vanguard of the changing face of women on TV who fight against male dominance and are more than a caricature of their male counterparts.

Women on TV are no more the attractive wallflower paying lip service to the male leads, but have become aggressively ambitious with a complex personality and ballsy outlook. We bring you a list of women like Claire Underwood who just cannot play second fiddle to men like Frank Underwood, and are ready to do whatever it takes to get what they deserve, both on screen and off it.

Raise a toast for the feminist leads of Television who are busting myths and taking the fight to men for all the right reasons.

#1 Carrie Mathison, Homeland

With an anti-psychotic drug dependency and a penchant for ill-advised affairs, this CIA agent has baggage. She can sniff out a terrorist or a dodgy set-up a mile off and she's doggedly determined to keep the bad guys at bay, even if it means breaking the rules and paying a huge personal cost (like living apart from her baby daughter). She also has nerves of steel when the situation demands it, like say, when a bomb's about to go off or a hostage-taker needs talking down.

#2 Daenerys Targaryen, Game of Thrones

Dany deserves our attention more than anyone because she is fighting it out in a medieval world where women are only good for breeding and bedding. She takes on her enemies with balls and maintains the legacy of her family by showing strength and ferocity to her advisors. She is wise and compassionate, or need we mention “mother of dragons.”

#3 Claire Underwood, House of Cards

Claire is the women behind a powerful man. Always plotting a move and staying one step ahead of her enemies. She is driving force behind her husband’s career who won’t shy away from taking a stand against him for her own aspirations. She won’t stop at nothing and can certainly teach us a lesson or two about the power of self-confidence.

#4 Samantha Jones, Sex and the City

Samantha is a poster girl of sexual liberation. She has an insatiable hunger for sex and doesn’t mind using men as they use women. She is fun and adventurous and will try anything once. While a steady stream of men pass through her bedroom, she's forever loyal to her girlfriends and will never judge anyone else's bad behavior.

#5 Kalinda Sharma, The Good Wife

Kalinda is fiercely loyal but is also seductive, cunning, manipulative, and violent. She is a private investigator who is turning tables in a man’s world. With “no bullshit” attitude, she is a testimony to the power of knee-high boots and a leather jacket.

#6 Peggy Olson, Mad Men

Peggy is killing sexism in the workplace, one male ego at a time. As a woman in a man's world, she needs every iota of strength and wit to prove herself. She needs to be ten times better than her male colleagues in 1960s ad land, and still remain calm when they're promoted above her. She's had to jump through plenty of hoops along the way, but this is a woman who can stand shoulders above the rest in a sleazy world of womanizing, whiskey-drinking and male ego.

#7 Gloria Pritchett, Modern Family

Gloria is unapologetically sexy, passionate and confident. A caring mother and a loving wife who is capable of surviving on streets, she is a full package one can ask for. She's completely over the top, but also sexy and warm-hearted; her bad temper will vanish as quickly as it's erupted and she heaps love onto those around her. Gloria knows exactly what she likes and what she doesn't, and has no hesitation in voicing that.

#8 Alicia Florrick, The Good Wife

Alicia Florrick fights a case for a drug lord, saves her firm from bankruptcy, and deals with her philandering husband, all at once. She is a figure of integrity but knows to play dirty to get things done. She is astute and brave and knows to survive in a cut-throat world of law and politics.

#9 Olivia Pope, Scandal

Olivia tackles every sordid political scandal with aplomb. She is a problem-solver and has dealt with issues like managing a White House controversy or negotiating her way out of a hostage situation. Not easy, huh?

#10 Galina 'Red' Reznikov, Orange is the New Black

There are many female characters who deserve space on this list from Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, but Red is the bravest of them all. She is a sadistic character who will maintain her integrity by punishing those who disrespect her. Not only is she devoted to her close-knit group of friends - and devastated when they refuse to speak to her - she's also the only person with the balls to stand up to baddie-above-all-baddie inmates, the ruthless and dangerous Vee.

#11 Laure Berthaud, Spiral

Laure keeps a manly look and can usually be seen munching a sandwich as she attempts to keep hold of her wayward team of cops. She is not even remotely glamorous, and is an incongruous hero compared to the usual slate of glossy female leads. She's kind, compassionate, conflicted and gritty. Expect her to be the last man standing as she chases down a knife-wielding gang member.
